What is the formosan termite?
The formosan subterranean termite, also known
as Coptotermes formosanus, infests more than 10 southern states in the US. The formosan termite causes
billions of dollars worth of damage every single year.
You can see pictures
of formosan termites as well.
These termites can not only cause damage
to homes in which they infest, but they can also destroy trees in a hurry. Trees infested by formosan
termites can fall over and crush homes and cars after being destroyed by these insects.
The formosan termite wasn't discovered in
the US until about 50 years ago, making it a relatively new guy on the scene. This "breed" of
termite was thought to be the same as the drywood termite until further
research identified differences between the two.
These termites are extremely strong and can
be quite difficult to destroy. The simple fact that the colonies are now so populated, makes removing
them a tough task for even the best in pest control.
It is to the point now that rather than removing
termites altogether, some companies are simply trying to alter the way termites behave instead.
